The pharmaceutical industry in India employs a hundred of thousand people and generates valuable foreign exchange. In fact, India is the largest supplier of generic medicine globally accounting for 20% of global exports.

The Indian industry also supplies around 40% of all generics in the US and over 50% of all global demand for numerous vaccines.

In the following sections, I will be talking about the leading pharmaceutical companies. In my consulting career spanning 20 years, I have helped many entrepreneurs set up pharmaceutical formulating plants, nitrogen plants, and surgical instrumentation-making centers.

Throughout my career, I have been associated with pharmaceutical companies in various capacities managing different departments of the industry. However, I started my career as an engineer fabricating and designing oxygen plants.

 

1.) Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd

It is the largest pharmaceutical company in India with headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra (India). The company manufactures and formulates drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Indian consumption and export as well.

Being the largest pharmaceutical company in India, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd has a got weightage of 24.09% in the Nifty Pharma Index. The pharma major has total sales of Rs 29066 Cr.

Moreover, it is the largest pharmaceutical company by market valuation and revenue.

The leading drug company offers drug formulations in various areas including neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, diabetology, psychiatry, ENT, surgery, urology, etc.

 

2.) Aurobindo Pharma Ltd

It is the 2nd largest pharmaceutical company in India by market valuation and revenue. The company was established in 1986 by Mr. P. V. Ramprasad Reddy, Mr. K. Nityananda Reddy, and a few other committed professionals.

Aurobindo came into existence with an amazing vision for its future growth.

The company duly started its operations in 19888-89 manufacturing Semi-Synthetic Penicillin (SSP) at their unit in Pondicherry.  It generates total sales of Rs 19564 Cr.

It is an international company making many pharmaceutical products including branded & generic formulations, specialty, and APIs.  The company generates total sales of Rs 16718Cr.

The manufacturing and operational facilities of Lupin are located in many countries including Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and India.

It has got weightage of 17% in the Nifty Pharma Index. With total sales of over Rs  14500 Cr, it is one of the largest companies in India.

As one of the top ten pharmaceutical companies in India, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories manufactures and supplies its products in India and various other countries on different continents.

The company supplies active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), pharmaceutical formulation and diagnostic kits, etc.

 

6.) Cadila Healthcare Ltd

Zydus Cadila is a prominent pharmaceutical company in India employing hundreds of thousands of people. The company is headquartered in Ahmadabad, India.

It has got manufacturing and research facilities located in five states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Moreover, it has got overseas facilities in the US and Brazil.

Revenue:  ₹ 15, 139 Cr.

It is one of the acclaimed Indian pharmaceutical companies. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals is committed to making new chemical entities (NCEs). The company is primarily engaged in the field of oncology, respiratory, and dermatology.

The company has many drugs in different stages of pre-clinical and clinical development.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has a significant presence not only in India but also in many other parts of the globe including the US, UK, and emerging countries.

Torrent Pharma is one of the foremost pharmaceutical companies in India. The company has got many centers for manufacturing and doing R&D.

It has got a significant market share in the therapeutic segment including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and women’s healthcare. The company has got a sizeable presence in numerous countries apart from India.

Divis Laboratories is a leading pharmaceutical company located in Hyderabad offering a diverse range of pharmaceutical products including APIs, intermediates, and nutraceuticals but not manufacturing oxygen gas plants.

It has many manufacturing and research centers located in different parts of the country.
