A lab-created diamond is like a parallel universe version of its natural counterpart; it has all of the same physical, chemical, and optical properties (often even more so!).

The one difference? They’re grown in a laboratory rather than deep within Mother Earth. Because of that simple fact, though, these are actually more environmentally friendly options than those found in nature.

How Are Natural Diamonds Made?

Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth in a process that begins when high-pressure, high-temperature fluid containing carbon (in various forms) dissolves rocks that contain silicon and oxygen.

This fluid rises toward Earth’s surface, where it’s under such extreme pressure that it breaks through. The rel

eased carbon then precipitates out of the solution as crystals—i.e., diamonds—that eventually find their way to mining sites around the world.

Why are Lab-Created Diamonds Made?

Diamonds are made from carbon, a natural element that has been present on Earth for billions of years. In fact, at least a part of every human is made up of carbon. Over time, heat and pressure transform carbon into precious gems like diamonds. This process happens naturally over millions of years deep within Earth’s crust.

But lab-grown diamonds are also made from 100% natural elements; only it happens in a matter of weeks, not millions of years!

That’s because scientists place man-made graphite under high temperatures and intense pressure to create synthetic diamonds in much shorter time periods than Mother Nature can achieve alone.

While a natural diamond has some inherent value, many people don’t know what to look for when buying one. The four Cs of diamond are cut, clarity, color, and carat—which are all important factors that affect quality.

Most lab-grown diamonds have an identical structure to their natural counterparts but with no defects (clarity) because they’re formed under controlled conditions in a lab.

Because these can be made flawless, their quality is comparable to if not better than natural stones in many cases.

Furthermore, lab-grown producers use new technologies to reduce impurities like nitrogen (color) making them extremely similar to any naturally found gemstone on Earth. The only difference is that these are cheaper since man-made means less money spent obtaining them.

How Does it Look Like When Compared to Natural Ones?

With lab-grown diamonds costing as little as a tenth of their mined counterparts, you might be tempted to think these gems are always going to cost less. While that’s true in some cases, there are other situations where mined diamonds can be cheaper.

For example, if you buy what is called an imperfect diamond, it will be much cheaper than a Lab Created Diamond Manufacturer with those same imperfections.

In other words, just because a diamond is grown in a lab doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to be cheaper; each one has its own unique price tag. Make sure you do your research before making any sort of jewelry purchase.

Is it Always Cheaper than Real Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are often less expensive than natural, mined diamonds. The price is primarily a function of supply, demand, quality, and size.

However, some manmade gems are more costly than their natural counterparts because companies can offer a wider range of fancy shapes and colors that might be difficult to find in nature. Also note that when comparing lab-made to mined gems, it’s important to consider what you’re getting for your money.
